Volpaia

A nice, though slightly strenuous walk from Radda, Volpaia is a charming little fortress hill town whose initial defence walls go back to the 13th Century. Today, little seems to have changed, except maybe the cluster of three restaurants that hug the centre. The best of the three is La Bottega di Volpaia, which serves simple yet hearty Tuscan fare coupled with a reasonable wine list that will not break the bank. With incredible views over the surrounding hills from its extensive garden it is the perfect setting for lunch or early supper, particularly in the autumn when they serve a fine handmade tagliatelle with sautéed porcini mushrooms.
