Horse riding near Vercenni

Of course, Tuscany is made for horse-riding as next to walking there is no better way to see the incredible countryside. Each vineyard and wood features its very own bridle paths, both around and through. Impenetrable by car, they will suck you deep into the countryside where you might see deer, porcupine, squirrels and an abundance of birds. And as one would expect, each area has its own stables that can arrange rides ranging from a couple of hours to a few days, stopping off at various country pensions for the night.

Badia a Coltibuono - San Fedele: 16.5km
Time: Two and a half to three hours

The ride starts at The Badia di Coltibuono, a magnificent 11th Century monastery from where you can travel downhill through the fir trees to San Donato Imperano, then through the woods to Gaiole and past the Medieval hamlet of Virtene on the Northeast edge of Chianti. From Virtene you will have a breathtaking view right across the valley. You then come to San Giusto in Salcio (home of the great wine) and finally you can proceed to San Fedele.
