Arezzo

Just an hour east of Vercenni lays the fascinating ancient Etruscan town of Arezzo. Situated on the Tuscan-Romania Apennine ridge, this was a strategic Roman district for centuries. A walk from the Cathedral, with its priceless artworks, may lead to the medieval towers of Fortezza Medicea or to the Loggiato Vasariano, one of the most significant Renaissance architectural works. Continue then to Piero della Francesca's fresco cycle narrating the Legend of the True Cross in the San Domenico church. A town steeped in history, Arezzo should not be missed if you're in the area.

Festivals and Events

'Giostra del Saraceno'
Each year Arezzo holds its 'Giostra del Saraceno' (the Joust of The Saraceno) that is held on the first Sunday of September. It is preceded by a 'minor' edition on the second last Saturday of June. Dating back to the XIV century, it takes place in the Arezzo's Piazza Grande and originates from the training of soldiers who exercised with a machine (a sort of metal mannequin) which symbolized the enemy. The machine, called the "Buratto Re delle Indie", is armed with the mazzafrusto (an iron ball on a chain) to hit the attacker. Taken extremely seriously, the whole affair is conducted in medieval costume, with each team representing a separate quarter of the city. The winner receives the highly coveted "Lancia d'Oro" which is forged every year and put up as a prize by the city. And of course, in true Italian fashion, whoever wins celebrates in a riot of drinking and dancing that lasts all night and can be attended by anyone.

Arezzo Antique Fair
Taking place on the first Sunday and the preceding last Saturday of each month, this is one of Italy's (and maybe Europe's) finest antique fairs. An open-air market stretching over about a square half mile through the city's old town, the fair sells just about everything: miniature Italian cars, deco lamps, vintage pharmaceutical paraphernalia, 200 year old artworks, deco chairs, art nouveau lighting, sixties Italian furniture, medical instruments and much more. My initial reaction was to hire a van, book a freight container and replenish my house with these amazing Italian artefacts which might cost ten times as much in the UK or US. However I was persuaded otherwise and contented myself with walking around, jaw agape.

Places to eat

Ristorante Il Saracino Di Barbini S.N.C.
Both the menu and wine list are stunningly simple while the rickety surroundings have remained unchanged for hundreds of years but you cannot just book a table. Best just ask the waiter what he recommends and you will leave amazed.
